Ledger, ca. 1875-1876? and 1880, documenting sales at this unidentified general store located in Phoenix, Greenwood County, S.C.; newspaper clippings [ca. 1890s] obscure most pages of the volume. Clippings [ca. 1891-1899?], document obituraries of persons famous for military, literary, or political accomplishments; other topics include national news, ettiquette, animal husbandry, cartoons, illustrations, and other news items most of which do not pertain to South Carolina, including a few items re preparations for the Columbian Exposition. S.C. items include, "Clemson on the Hill," p. 128, listing names, ages, and home counties of students, aged 14 to 29, with biographical sketches of faculty; "Surface Draining, " letter, Feb. 1876, p. 88, from E.W.C., Mars Bluff, S.C., to editor of Southern Cultivator, re ditches, drainage, and plowing of fields. Clipping, "Carolina Tea," p. 357, re cultivation of tea by Charles U. Shepard at his Pinehurst [Tea Gardens] in Summerville, S.C.; notes earlier attempts ca. 1860, in Summerville by "Gen. Le Duc, " and in Fayetteville, N.C., by "Mr. Smith." Also includes clippings re tour by the "California pugilist" James J. Corbett and his wife, p. 414, re trip through North Carolina, with possibly satirical report that mayor of Charlotte, N.C., brought charges against Corbett due to his "desecrating the Sabbath by punching the bag" leading to his being smuggled aboard a train during the night, arriving in Spartanburg, S.C., to avoid charges.
